May 2009 - Walk for Health a Huge Success

Foundation Executive Director Teresa Cooper, Delta Hospital Acute Care Director Martha Cloutier, Foundation Chair Steve Millen, MK Delta Land VP Joanne Barnett and Mayor Lois Jackson cut the ribbon

Delta, BC – On Sunday May 3, over 280 participants took part in the first-ever Delta Hospital Foundation Walk for Health. The event had the walkers complete distances of 2, 5 or 10 kilometres and raised $64,650 for the hospital. The family-oriented fitness event enjoyed sunshine and a terrific turn-out of family and friends that helped cheer the walkers on.

A spirited warm-up by Fitwell’s for Women got things started while local Celtic and folk band Doghouse created a festive atmosphere. Participants enjoyed their walk around Delta Hospital grounds and also took in a variety of other activities. For the kids there was face-painting by BMO, a bouncy castle and games. Participants also took in a BBQ by the LBA plus a health and fitness expo.

Many teams entered the walk, with Speed’s Pub of Ladner raising the most funds at over $10,000. The team was walking in honour of Barb Dey, a cancer survivor that has worked at the pub for many years. Top event fundraisers on the pub’s team, Mary Ann and Harlow Burrows, raised over $4,000 each and won a Vibration Trainer from Guideline Fitness and a $250 Thrifty Foods Smile card.

Delta Hospital Foundation Communication’s Coordinator and event organizer Neil Corbett could not have been happier with the results. With the initial goal set at $40,000, the day was a huge success. “We’re very fortunate to have an extremely supportive community when it some to our hospital and everyone really got behind this fun event”, says Corbett. “Our presenting sponsor MK Delta Lands was very generous and matched the first $20,000 in participant’s funds. That really helped get things going and it just grew from there.”

The event was also an opportunity for the Foundation to invite the community to Delta Hospital and celebrate a terrific year. In 2008, the hospital regained its acute care status and acquired a new CT scanner in which the community helped to raised most of the $1.7 million needed for the purchase of the life-saving equipment.

Next up for the Foundation is the Delta Health Golf Classic on May 28, which will be raising funds for new arthroscopy equipment. This almost sold-out tournament takes place at King’s Links by the Sea and is now in its 10th year.
